When IJN carrier HOSHO was commissioned in 1922 she became the first carrier completed to be designed for
the role. Her aircraft were: the 1MF Type 10 fighter (138 built in several versions); the 2MR (C1M) was an enlarged
2 seat version of the same basic design, also powered by the Hispano engine and designated Type 10 Carrier Based Reconnaissance.
In all versions, 159 were built and after years of naval operations many were used in civil service.
The first versions of both designs used a car type radiator while later versions had a more pointed nose with
Lamblin Radiators mounted on the fuselage sides or underneath and the 2MT1 (B1M1) that entered service in 1925
with the designation of Type 13 Torpedo Bomber. This was the longest lived of the three designs, remaining in
production in continuously improved forms until 1933.
A total of 442 of them, in all versions, were built.

The first take off from the Hosho's deck occurred on 22 February 1923 by a Mitsubishi 1MF3 Type 10 fighter,
one of three aircraft specifically designed to operate on the carrier.
The other two were the Mitsubishi 2MR Reconnaissance plane, and the 1MT torpedo tri-plane.

The first landing on the Hosho was made by a British civilian, a Mr. Jordan, a day later on the 23 of February.
The initial landing system used on the Hosho was based off the British method of longitudinal wires running the
length of the deck, in addition with the cross deck wire. The system resulted in more annoyance than benefit
and was scrapped in favor of the traditional cross deck arresting cables.
