On May, 9, 1933, IJN Ryujo was commissioned in the Navy and begins her sea trials.
During June-September 1933 undergoes further sea trials and training exercises for her air group consisting of
9 Mitsubishi Type 13 B1M (+3 spares) attack aircraft and 3 Nakajima Type 3 (+2 spares) A1N fighters.

HO-221 is the A1N2 version and was flown from carrier Ryujo at Japan, 1934.
Two vertical red bands indicates that IJN Ryujo is the second ship of 2nd Carrier Division. The IJN Akagi was the flagship.

HO-301 was flown by a wingman of IJN carrier Ryujo, during October, 1934.
On September-October 1934, IJN Ryujo undergoes new trials. Her aircraft complement consists of
9 Mitsubishi Type 13 B1M attack aircraft, 6 Nakajima Type 3 A1N and 6 Nakajima Type 90 A2N fighters.

HO-14 was E4N3-C flown by a wingman of IJN carrier Ryujo, on December, 1934.
On  December 1934 IJN Ryujo is selected to test carrier-based dive-bombing tactics. Her aircraft complement consists
of 6 Nakajima Type 90 E4N3-C (+2 spares) carrier-bombers, 6 Yokosuka Type 92 B3Y1 (+2 spares) attack planes
and 12 Nakajima Type 90 A2N3 (+4 spares)  fighters.

HO-105 was E4N3-C flown by a wingman of IJN carrier Ryujo, on December, 1934.
On February 1935, after more than one month of intensive dive-bombing testing, the E4N3-C plane is deemed too fragile
and unsuitable for that task. A new plane, the Type 94 Aichi D1A1 is to be intensively tested from airfield nearby Kure Naval
Base in the following months. This latter aircraft will become the first Japanese dive-bomber, carrier-based aircraft.
